“Solomon loved the LORD, walking in the statutes of David his father, only he sacrificed and made offerings at the high places.” (1 Kings 3:3 ESV)
The word “only” can or should be translated “except” meaning, Solomon loved the LORD except he continually worshiped the false gods of his many wives.
We all can relate to this, we all have are areas or issues that are more difficult to give over to God than others and for Solomon it was idolatry. Here is the question I am asking myself and I am now putting it to you:
“I love the LORD and walk in the way of the godly except……what? What is your exception? What is the area that you exclude? What is the one area of your life that you do not give over to God?”
Whatever it is, that is where your greatest battle is and where most battles are won or lost. Realize that there are sins that we are prone to or that easily entangle us (Hebrews 12:1) and we must continually be in the habit of putting them to death.
How do we put these sins that so easily entangle us to death?
“For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.”
(Romans 8:13 ESV)
“But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”
(Galatians 5:16 ESV)
“In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints”
(Ephesians 6:16-18 ESV)
“Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul.”
(1 Peter 2:11 ESV)
