“For the LORD spoke thus to me with his strong hand upon me, and warned me not to walk in the way of this people, saying: ‘Do not call conspiracy all that this people calls conspiracy, and do not fear what they fear, nor be in dread. But the LORD of hosts, him you shall honor as holy. Let him be your fear, and let him be your dread. And he will become a sanctuary and a stone of offense and a rock of stumbling to both houses of Israel, a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. And many shall stumble on it. They shall fall and be broken; they shall be snared and taken.’”
(Isaiah 8:11-15 ESV)

“LORD”
Original Word: יְהֹוָה
Transliteration: Yhvh
Phonetic Spelling: (yeh-ho-vaw’)
Definition: self-Existent or Eternal; Jehovah, Jewish national name of God — Jehovah, the LORD.

So here we find that the eternal self existing Creator God, the LORD, Jehovah God, is speaking to the prophet Isaiah and He tells him these things in reference to Himself:

  1. Honor Him as holy
  2. Fear Him
  3. Let Him be your dread
  4. He will become a sanctuary
  5. He will become a stone of offense
  6. He will become a rock of stumbling

So Jehovah God will become a stone of offense and a rock of stumbling Himself, He claims that He will be those things. Check out 1 Peter chapter 2:

“As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone,  a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,”and “A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense.” They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.”
(1 Peter 2:4-8 ESV)

Peter says that Jesus is that stone of stumbling and rock of offense. Check out what Paul says in Romans 9:

“What shall we say, then? That Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness have attained it, that is, a righteousness that is by faith; but that Israel who pursued a law that would lead to righteousness did not succeed in reaching that law. Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were based on works. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone, as it is written, “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense; and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”
(Romans 9:30-33 ESV)

Who is Paul speaking of? Who is the rock that the Jews stumble over but that Gentiles by placing their faith in can attain righteousness?

It’s Jesus. Jesus is the stone of stumbling and the rock of offense. If you think the writers of Scripture are just playing fast and loose with Scripture look at Isaiah chapter 7 and chapter 9 the chapter right before and the chapter right after our text in chapter 8:

“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”
(Isaiah 7:14 ESV)

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.”
(Isaiah 9:6-7 ESV)

These also are obvious references to Jesus. So what? What is the big deal?

The big deal is that Jehovah God, the eternal self existent Creator God claimed that He Himself would be the stone of stumbling and rock of offense and Jesus was Himself the stone of stumbling and rock of offense. Jesus is Jehovah God, the eternal self existent Creator God.

Here is the logic for you

Premise 1 – God claimed He Himself was going to be a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense

Premise 2- Jesus was/is the stone of stumbling and rock of offense

Conclusion – Jesus is God!

Do you have the correct Jesus?
