“For His anger is but for a moment, His favor is for a lifetime; Weeping may last for the night, But a shout of joy comes in the morning” (v5)
“You have turned for me my mourning into dancing” (v11)
Word pictures galore in just three verses: slumber to your eyelids, gazelle from the hunters hand, bird from the Fowler, go to the ant. I can picture all of these in my mind.
Jairus daughter is 12 years old and the woman had the hemorrhage for 12 years.
V33 the woman is afraid. This is becoming a theme in Mark. When Jesus has done something which shows off His divinity the people respond with fear. At the end of Mark 4 Jesus still the sea and they fear, then in 5 with the Gerazene Demoniac they fear when Jesus sets him in his right mind.
When Jesus says the girl is sleeping and not dead the people go from “loudly weeping and wailing” to “laughing” – what a facade
Jesus continually gives a command after He heals – “and He gave them strict orders that no one should know…” I have 2 questions: (1) why does He say this? Why does He not want them to praise God and tell what Jesus has done? (2) No one really obeys this, and how could they? There are so many witnesses to this girl dying it would no doubt get out. I wonder why Jesus does this, there must be something I am missing.
The people of His hometown are amazed at what Jesus has become, they look down on Joseph the carpenter and see him as nothing special.
Jesus calls the 12, He commissions them, He instructs them, He equips them, He now sends them out in pairs. Jesus is a master discipler.
V32 “this is the law for him in whom there is an infection of leprosy, whose means are limited for his cleansing” – why does this person have limited mean? Because the law required that they live away from everyone else, they had to survive off of the generosity of others to come outside and bring them food and such. The law takes that into account, that seems very gracious and loving of God to do. In these tedious moments of the law come out these little gems of Gods amazing grace.
The law of leprosy is very detailed. It will be important to remember these things about leprosy as we progress in OT and NT gospels because some famous people get it and people come to Jesus with it.
